Two-year-old put in care after mum banned junk food

By Lucy Thornton 3/12/2009

A fussy-eating boy of two was taken into care for four months after his parents refused to feed him junk, his angry mum claims.

Zak Hessey was losing weight and hospital experts urged his healthy-living mum and dad to feed him crisps and chocolate. But when Lisa, 28, and Paul, 48, questioned their opinion the lad was apparently given a twoweek in-patient assessment by doctors before being put in foster care.

The Hesseys got Zak back after a legal battle - but they are furious as they claim he is now a chocoholic after being pumped full of junk food. Lisa said: "I thought I was doing the right thing going to the best people for advice when Zak began to refuse to eat and lose weight. Instead they basically accused me of neglect. I have four other children and they are perfectly healthy."

The couple's nightmare began when they took Zak to Chesterfield Royal Hospital near Derby to see a consultant paediatrician in July. Lisa thought he would soon be coming home. But before they knew it he was placed with foster parents Lisa said: "Eventually we had two court hearings. At the final one social services did an about-turn, admitting in foster care Zak was exactly the same with food as at home."

Derbyshire county council said: "We only take a child into our care either with the consent of the parents or following very careful consideration by a court."

I find little sympathy with the mother, here.

She thinks her personal opinions (based mostly on her personal prejudices, it seems) on health should trump the expert opinions of doctors. When this threathens the well being of her child, she is surprised when there exists a system that protects children from their parents.

You know, this sounds like a article right out of the Onion. Is the Mirror in the U.K. a real newspaper or one of those sensationalist newspapers? I mean the sensational ones don't mind running hoax articles like the rape tunnel, you know without doing even a little research before publishing or airing it (I'm looking at you Fox tv) hell how hard is it to even Google the damn story.

I don't think this is a true story, it is just too out there, there are many more healthy ways to get the nutrients one needs, and I'd highly suspect any doctor who advises otherwise.
