I don't want government in the business of religion and that's what marriage is. It's a religious based issue muddled into a civil contract.
There should only be civil contracts modifiable to suit individual taste rather than the one size fits all modified only by complex pre-nuptual agreements.
I hope to live long enough to see that.
What? I plan on living forever. Don't you?

Maybe religious based, but it has grown out of the religious shadow and has become a law(s) in most industrialized countries. Marriage is so intertwined into our society, that is has influence on so many aspects of our lives it'd now be hard to change the system. You can get married without saying the words in front of a religious leader.

I just want to know, why are gays so anxious about making themselves miserable. I mean just talk to any married couple that has been together for more than 2 years.

I never really liked the "legalization" of marriage. Why is all of that paper bullshit even needed if the couple actually wants to be together?
It has bothered me how, throughout history, the "government" is always the one that says whether something is official or not.
Personally, I don't give a damn about people of the same gender being married, it is not my problem anyway, even though I don't find any logic in homosexuality.

Huhm, this is about love. There is no logic in that.

I used to be all pro-gay marriage, and now I can care less about the whole marriage aspect in general. Who cares who wants to be legally bound or not (okay lots)? It's all government papers, some places a female and a male living together for a year are considered "common-law married". Whether they are even in a relationship or not! What the? But if it's two males or females, then it's just seperate roomies. It's all legalities, and often religious beliefs -as mentioned. People have their beliefs, like to have some "moral ground" of which to step on so they feel secure. In the end, it's all to their own personal opinions, and I doubt anyone is going to convince people otherwise. Even if you point out it's all a government facade for more money, and dirty divorces and lawyers. Bah, I know I'm not getting legally married... although the thought of having a reception and after party with all your family friends, everyone doting on you for one day in extravegence (minus the Vegas marriages...)is pretty cool. Especially if there is open bar and everything is paid for. So I think we should just throw some fake non-legal marriages, then when you get a divorce it's not so exhausting and bank breaking... well... hopefully!

The government should be involved in the religious aspect of marriages. I say this as a (psuedo) christian: render unto Caeser what is Caesers and what is Gods, God's

The only reason it is is because of taxes and other money related business.

I'm a atheist but wouldn't object to having a wedding via religion to make it all official like. The ceremony is just a celebration of your union... you should already be in love and committed. ;)

Many times the public ceremony is only done to please the respective families involved.

Other times a couple decide to make the public celebration as unique as they are by doing something different.

I'm biased in favor of public wedding ceremonies in general and receptions. After all, I've officiated at three public ceremonies as a member of the Klingon clergy and I always like an excuse for a party.

Err. my statement should have been: "shouldn't". I don't think the Gov't should be involved in the religious aspects. The Legal and finiancial aspects should be gov't related, but the religious part shouldn't. Sorry.
